The 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship is a 14-game match taking place in the St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan on April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, who finished 1st and 2nd in the 2022 Candidates Tournament. Reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen has chosen not to defend his title. The first player to reach 7.5 points wins, while a 7:7 tie will be decided by a playoff. The prize fund is €2 million, split 60:40, or 55:45 if it goes to a playoff. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40.

Each player has 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for the next 20, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment starting only from move 61. A playoff will consist of four 25-minute games, with a 10-second increment from move 1. If still tied, up to two pairs of 5+3 games will be played. If tied again, single 3+2 games are played, with colours reversed each game, until one player wins.

  1. Always give the fastest and most complete review of the game

  2. disappointed.
this is not worthy game of chess.

  3. game 11, my gosh how many games do they have to play, 100?

  4. This match started ham but has petered out into draw fest

  5. When are we going to see you making the ceremonial first move, Antonio?

  6. If you haven't shown it before Agadmator then John Nunn v Alexander Beliavsky from 1985 is a wonderful game to watch 👍🏻 #suggestion

  7. "Tomorrow is a rest day." Well, so was today, pretty much.

  8. It's seems to me, and I'm barely a chess amateur, but by play and body language, Ling is the more dangerous, happy to draw with black and keep going. Ian on the other hand is probably more experienced but being pressed by Ling's white attacks. Time will tell all of course. As an amateur rooting for Ling, but I still feel whomever wins will still wonder inside if they are really the best…

  9. They should have just did the repeating moves two more times, becomes a fivefold repetition which isn't a draw by agreement so it's automatically a draw regardless of that rule.

  10. @agadmator any update to their live ratings during the match?

  11. highlight of the game: Rook captures

  12. Nepo has won. Ding is not as strong as Nepo when it comes to classical chess. Nepo just needs to draw and it's so easy for him

  13. And as Agad finished mentionng who had it against whom, the game decided to be drawn 😂

  14. Can put an evaluation bar up like other channels. It really helps us learn and evaluate.

  15. This is why Bobby Fischer wanted a match the first to ten wins. This format makes for boring chess.

  16. Will this tournament have another exciting game before it’s all said and done seems the players agreed rather quickly to a tie in this one content it wasn’t a loss

  17. Please make a playlist of world championship matches yearwise🙏

  18. The enture prep of ding has leaked , no wonder ian blizs all the moves ,
    This match is so over

  19. Seriously, how could any morally normal human being root for either commie in this match? Especially when the same old bullshit of spying and subterfuge arises. Has any russian in the history of competition ever been part of a square match where there wasn't some shadow of scumbaggery looming over his head? I don't think so.

  20. Is Magnus secretly helping Ian? He's been awfully quiet.

  21. Before the match I was liking Ding, because of the way Magnus dominated Nepo, and while Nepo was playing in events coming up to the match, Ding was not so I thought they were working hard on prep. I don't know enough about this rumor of the prep being leaked. After his strong win in Game 6 with the London, (even though Nepos team would be working on that) I felt he had to go back to that system with the white pieces, he did not in Games 8 and 10 and did not win. You can't win the WCC by drawing or losing with the white pieces. Yes maybe Nepo is being a little dangerous here drawing with the white pieces, but the pressure is on Ding to get a win.

  22. I think ding is gonna go all in next game as its his 2nd last game with white and even if next 2 games are draw cant imagine what is game 14 gonna look like

  23. Never have a seen such a decisive capture fest.

  24. #suggestion how about the last game of Lasker and Schlecters world championship match? A fighting slav defense with a unique historical background as some believe schlecter had to win with a two point margin, while others dispute that claim, and lasker being down a point going into the round, so for both players only a win would do!

  25. Ding is too conservative to become or deserve the title of WCC.

  26. No Marshall for you!!

    Lol Soup Nazi anyone?

  27. Somehow i feel sleepy watching this classical game today

  28. As of move 15, we have a completely new game.
As of move 21, the game is a dead draw

  29. Ding has White pieces in game 12 and Game 14. Ding needs to shake Nepo’s confidence and win game 12. Nepo played blunder after blunder against Magnus in the World Chess Championship 2021. Magnus had him completely confused.

  30. Ceremonial Moves are one of the perks of sponsorship! No sponsorships, the WCC is two guys playing in a Starbucks or at the Y. Join the Real World!

  31. I don`t get Ding‘s opening choice. He should know by now that he can‘t beat Nepo with Black in Spanish! When does Ding hope he can even out? In game 14???

  32. If you look at it from a different perspective, a different sport like Formula One, if a teams preparations are leaked and another team obtains that information and uses it they would be involved in a court case possibly thrown out of the sport for good.
How does a leak in the world chess championship occur? Is it some rogue who wants to see the world burn? I doubt it. And if its not that it must be someone on the opposition orchestrating it, and they certainly would not orchestrate it without the approval of Ian.

If you think about the purity of chess, forget prizes etc, a real champion would see that there is a leak and then they would forbid anyone to use it for tarnishing the game, a real champion would not want any help they would want the championship to be theirs on merit not just an ill gotten gain.

Prizes and political factors put pressure on people to cheat, if there was an actual leak of the prep and Ian used it then Ian should be disqualified from the WCC and a thorough investigation should be made but we know nothing will happen because the world of chess has been found in recent months to be ill prepared to deal with cheating.

  33. Yea this was a snooze fest. Ding just putting his effort into white next game.

  34. I think it's time for Ding to take risk.🙂

  35. LiChess should make a “private” mode that prevents games from being tracked or recorded

  36. man are Ding and Technology eternal enemies, Ding is the single most chess player I can remember losing online games because of dc, and now preparation is out because of their online "secret" matches.

  37. The "leaked" games were only found after the games had been played. Was there more?

  38. It's the captures, captures, captures of Agads dreams! 😛

  39. This game was played like a Noob. No way it felt like a World chess championship match. Total waste of time who watched it live

  40. I feel like this match is a no win win for either. You aren't the world champion since you didnt dethrone Carlsen. Basically whoever loses technically wins in a way.
